Client based in Foothill Ranch, CA partnered with SDI to reconfigure a 140,000 square
foot facility. Typically this client will distribute 11,000,000 units annually,
many of the orders are very small quantities and contain multiple SKU's. By reviewing the operation and physical constraints of the facility SDI redesigned the picking operations to maximize space utilization and minimize picking labor. Traditional methodologies of replenishing a forward pick location were thrown out and a new methodology adopted. The new method of storage placed every received carton into storage and made each location a pickable location. The facility can hold in excess of 100,000 SKU's and they are all pickable all of the time. The aisles were reduced and wire guided narrow aisle trucks were used to minimize aisle widths. Space efficiency was improved by close to 40% and picking efficiency improved by 30%. The client uses a WMS system that optimizes the pick path, that large gaylord that collects a wave of product means that the picking time is maximized and driving time minimized. |
