SDI’s Warehouse Sortation System (WSS) was originally developed by RTI, SDI’s sister company. The system works in conjunction with hang, flat or tilt-tray sorters to control sortation operations.
WSS represents a hardware and software package integrated to provide productive, reliable and versatile warehouse sortation control. Although standalone versions can be supplied, WSS is normally interfaced with a client’s host system which is usually – but not always – a WMS.
The client’s host computer transmits ASCII text files to WSS through the system network. These files contain distribution orders organised in standardised formats. Based upon the distribution orders, WSS identifies items or merchandise placed on the sorter, and delivers them to individual dropstations on the sorter for shipment. WSS then transmits ASCII text files back to the client’s host computer, reporting the results of the sorting process and providing the user with detailed reports about sorter productivity and other ancillary functions.
Throughout and after the sorting process, operators and management have access to information on sorting progress via induction, control and administration PCs, enabling product tracking and missing items to be identified.
Carton Content - A function which is important to many companies sorting products is the ability to be able to ‘cut off’ a carton, tote or other carrying medium (rail if a hangsorter is being used) when it is full to provide a record of what has been dropped to each carton. This is achieved using an RF device – either wearable or hand-held – to scan the carton and its related dropstation, enabling the system to produce packing lists for each carton. The packing lists can be printed and sent with the goods at the time of shipment or emailed to the delivery point in advance of arrival.
